FIGHTING the WHITE MAN'S WARS

AVE AFTER wavc of European settlers arrived on New England’s shores in the late 17th and i8th centuries. These new settlers were

More likely to take the land than to buy it, and many Native American nations found themselves being pushed west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Conflicts such as the two-year Tuscarora Indian War in North Carolina continued to break out between Native Americans and colonists. Yet more often conflicts broke out between the different European nations— the Swedish against the Dutch, the Dutch against the English, the English against the Erench, the Erench against the Spanish. Europeans

Constantly fought over land; who owned it, and who had trading rights.

Unfortunately, when European conflicts occurred. Native Americans were often affected. Although they could sometimes manipulate the countries against one another. Native Americans were increasingly asked to fight with one country against another.

Many Native American communities tried to remain neutral, yet for the most part only the Haudenosaunee were stable and powerful enough to accomplish this. Other bands and nations were pulled into the conflicts, particularly the French and Indian War that started in 1754. Native Americans quickly learned that punishment came with supporting the losing side.
