One purpose in writing this book was to help open a new historical field to the growing band of followers of these history-based hobbies. The period from 1470 to 1650 has many advantages for them, with its great colour and variety in appearance — what troops of any era could provide a more interesting subject to the modeller than the German Lansknechts, the Polish Winged Hussars, the Turkish Dellis or the French Gendarmes d’Ordonnance, or a greater variety of flags and standards than those which flew over every company of infantry or squadron of horse in this brilliant era? For those whose bent is research, there is still much fascinating work to be done on this very inadequately-explored period, while the lack of uniformity in so many of its troops gives free reign to the imaginative.
Though the manufacturers of military miniatures do not, as yet, pay as much attention to this period as to, say, the Napoleonic or Ancient eras, they are producing an increasing number of figures, and at the end of this section will be found alistofthoseavailableat the time of writing.
