The treasures of Quedlinburg ... the Trojan gold ... the Amber Room. These fabled objects are only the tiny summit of an immense mountain of artifacts—artistic, religious, historic—that were sold, confiscated, stolen, dismembered, defaced, destroyed, or buried as Europe succumbed first to the greed and fury of the Nazis and then to the ravages of war. Now, in a riveting account brimming with tales of courage and sacrifice, of venality and beastliness, Lynn H. Nicholas meticulously reconstructs the full story of this act of cultural rape and its aftermath.

In doing so, she offers a new perspective on the history of the Third Reich and of World War II.

A riveting account of the conspirators who plotted to kill Hitler in July 1944, and the methods they used to keep a half million men from the battlefields of France and Russia. Without the efforts of these high-ranking German officers, the war against Hitler might have had a completely different outcome. It is a highly detailed account, but also a very readable book.

What was it really like for the soldiers of 2 New Zealand Division in the Second World War? How did they spend their time and how did they see their lives as servicemen, from training at home and sailing off to war, to setting up camp, relaxing off-duty, fighting in hostile environments and possibly being taken prisoner? This anthology is a personal selection of material describing the experiences of these men, with the great majority of the collection written from within its ranks. Colloquially known to its members as 'The Div', it was by far the major part of New Zealand's Second Expeditionary Force. In this book John Gordon presents a lively and illuminating selection of the published words of members of 'The Div' or those with close associations. The chosen extracts are drawn from memoirs, fiction, verse, news reports and magazine articles penned by soldiers of all ranks. The result is a compilation of the written views and experiences of over 80 insiders, creating an intimate glimpse of life and war within 'The Div'. From the declaration of war to the return home, this is a sample of the experiences of well over 100,000 New Zealand men who served in the Division: how they coped with discipline and disaster, sacrifice and success. They write with the same frankness, humour, wry cynicism and understatement that they used to cope with the challenges of their war.

Each volume makes use of over a hundred rare and valuable photographs, many of them taken by Luftwaffe personnel, to bring history to life and record both the men and the aircraft they flew. This book casts a brilliant, roving searchlight on the drama and human tragedy of a vast military debacle. It is the last winter of World War II in Eastern Europe, the months that began with the collapse of the exhausted German Army and ended only when the Russian tanks at last came to a halt before the door of Hitler's bunker in the Reichskanzehrei garden in Berlin. Juergen Thorwald participated in the rescue of refugees in Eastern Germany and after the war interviewed civilian refugees and military survivors, from Guderian to Wehrmacht privates, to gather the full story of that enormous battle, so little known in the West. From those interviews he has composed this book, an eyewitness report of Armageddon in the terrible winter when Hitler and the Russian Army brought death and defeat to the German people.

Once again TimeLife gives an excellent account of a particular period of the Second World War. The detail is all there. The escalation with Norway, the conquest of the Netherlands, and of course, the brilliant Fallschirmjagers exploits againt Belgian positions. This book presents a closer picture of the Desert Fox, Rommel and his 'Ghost Division' , the 7th Panzer. The occupation of France is presented with good clarity , and lastly the Luftwaffe's efforts against Britain. Overall, an excellent source for the condensed study of Blitzkreig.

In a Segregated Military, the African American Armored Unit That Helped Patton Check the German Advance, Close the Rhine Ring, and Spearhead a New Postwar Army
Known primarily for being the first African American armored unit to see combat in World War II and as future baseball star Jackie Robinson’s onetime outfit, the 761st Tank Battalion was forged in a devil’s cauldron of heat and prejudice at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. Here, most viewed the tankers as tokens in a racial experiment, rather than as fellow American soldiers who would actually be deployed to fight a common enemy. Led by a small cadre of white and black officers, the 761st trained to the pinnacle of its craft. The Black Panthers, as they soon were called, proved their battle prowess against other units bound for combat on the parched Texas training fields. For this, they earned a coveted assignment to fight under General George S. Patton and go head-to-head with the best of Hitler’s arsenal. Moving to the front in November 1944, trial by fire soon shook the unit to its core. Ambushed by a veteran German force, the 761st suffered heavy casualties in the confusion as they cut their way out of the trap. But the men rallied to overcome self-doubt and vindicate their losses. Quickly battle hardened, the tankers saw intense combat through November and when Germany launched its last-ditch offensive through the Ardennes in December, the 761st fought side-by-side with Patton’s Third Army. Moving swiftly, the unit helped check the German advance, cut resupply routes to the forces surrounding beleaguered Bastogne, and drove the enemy back, recapturing towns crucial to the final defeat of Germany.
In The Black Panthers: A Story of Race, War, and Courage—the 761st Tank Battalion in World War II, historian Gina M. DiNicolo tells the full and unvarnished history of this important American fighting force. Relying on extensive archival research, including documents that had not been consulted in previous accounts, and interviews with surviving soldiers and family members, the author describes the unit’s training, deployment, combat, and individuals, such as Sgt. Ruben Rivers, one of only seven African American men awarded the Medal of Honor for World War II heroism. The professionalism, dedication, and courage of the 761st and other non-white units made clear that the strength of the American army in the future lay with integration—one of the enduring accomplishments of these servicemen.

In the weeks leading up to D-Day, Dwight D. Eisenhower seethed with nervous energy. He had not expected his military career to bring him to this moment. The son of pacifists, Ike graduated from high school more likely to teach history than to make it. Casting new light on this profound evolution, Eisenhower chronicles the unlikely, dramatic rise of the supreme Allied commander.
Beginning with the lasting effect of Eisenhower's impoverished youth, bestselling biographer Carlo D'Este follows his subject through West Point and a sometimes troubled marriage; toil under MacArthur in the Philippines during the 1930s; the inner sanctums of the War Department; the general's painful North African apprenticeship; and, finally, the dramatic events leading to the Allied victory in May 1945.
Exposing for the first time numerous myths that have surrounded the war hero and his family (such as his romance with his wartime driver, Kay Summersby), D'Este also probes Eisenhower's famous clashes with his American peers and the British chiefs of staff, as well as his relations with legendary figures, including Winston Churchill and George S. Patton.
Unlike other biographies of the general, Eisenhower captures Ike's true character, from his youth to the pinnacle of his career and afterward.

In late winter, they were then pulled out and sent to Belgium near the end of the Ardennes Campaign and again fought their way into and across Germany, ending the war near the Czechoslovakian border. The 607th received credit for the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe campaigns.

Accounts of eleven bizarre but true incidents during World War II include a secret alliance between the U.S. Navy and the Mafia and Japanese bombing by balloon of our Midwest. Only seven months before their surrender at the end of World War II, the Japanese launched a bombing attack on the United States. Thousands of bombs attached to high altitude balloons penetrated and exploded as far inland from California as Iowa and Kansas. A full account of how the American government minimized the effects of these Japanese "windship weapons" is only one of several strange and little-known World War II stories told in this book.
