In Spring 1945 one final hurdle faced the American and British Armies under Ike's supreme command - the Rhine. This mighty river was literally the last ditch for the defence of Hitler's Germany. Crossing it would be a major military undertaking. The race was on to find intact crossings that could save many lives and precious time.

Largely responsible for crushing Japanese airpower wherever the American fast carrier force sailed, the Grumman F6F Hellcat was considered the most important Allied aircraft in the Pacific during 1943 and 1944. Designed for speed, range, and climb to compete with Japan's exceptional Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it succeeded not only in engaging the "Zeke" on equal terms but also in dictating the rules of combat. Fighters in every sense of the word, the Hellcats were credited with destroying more than five thousand Japanese aircraft, gaining outright air supremacy over the invasion beaches, and helping ensure Allied amphibious victories in the Central Pacific.

As the United States began its campaign against numerous Japanese-held islands in the Pacific, Japanese tactics required them to develop new weapons and strategies. One of the most crucial to the island assaults was a new group of amphibious gunboats that could deliver heavy fire close in to shore as American forces landed. These gunboats were also to prove important in the interdiction of inter-island barge traffic and, late in the war, the kamikaze threat. Several variations of these gunboats were developed, based on the troop carrying LCI(L). They included three conversions of the LCI(L), with various combinations of guns, rockets and mortars, and a fourth gunboat, the LCS(L), based on the same hull but designed as a weapons platform from the beginning. By the end of the war the amphibious gunboats had proven their worth.

Most people who lived through the Second World War see it in rather simplistic terms. Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo started the war; they attacked the democracies; we gave them better than we got; and Germany, Italy and Japan got exactly what they deserved. Thirty years after the war ended one can afford to take a less emotional look at the greatest war in all history and examine its causes, course and results with a more critical eye. In history there are few genuine villains and even fewer genuine heroes.

Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini (29 July 1883 – 28 April 1945) was an Italian politician, journalist, and leader of the National Fascist Party, ruling the country as Prime Minister from 1922 until his ousting in 1943. This superb close-up of the tremendous drama of the air battles over Britain during World War II brilliantly re-creates one of the greatest flying adventures of all time. In July 1940 Hitler promised to invade England and began to amass the greatest invasion armada in history. But first he had to smash the Royal Air Force. Hopelessly outnumbered ... at least five to one . . . the immortal warriors of the RAF faced the deadly might of Hitlers air power with a courage and gallantry that were incredible. "Never before," said Winston Churchill, "have so many owed so much to so few." Here is the full and heroic story of those men in the Spitfires and Hurricanes, a breathless minute-by- minute account of some of the fiercest dogfights in the history of aerial warfare. The Battle— and its meaning— has never been brought more vividly to life than in this book.

The Panther V evidenced a number of problems in combat, and this was the proof of the rushed development programme that was made obvious from the events at Kursk. However, despite its disappointing battlefield debut, the Panther is frequently hailed as the best all round tank of the war. This fascinating study by Emmy award winning author and historian Bob Carruthers draws on a wide variety of combat reports and unique primary sources to weigh up the facts in order to produce the definitive single volume overview of a legendary fighting machine. Included are numerous examples of wartime combat reports from both Allied and German sources, additionally there are a large selection of extracts from the Pantherfibel, the original crew training manual. This superb book is essential reading for anyone interested in tank warfare during World War II. This book is part of the \'Hitler\'s War Machine\' series, a new military history range compiled and edited by Emmy Award winning author and historian Bob Carruthers. The series draws on primary sources and contemporary documents to provide a new insight into the true nature of Hitler\'s Wehrmacht. The series consultant is David Mcwhinnie creator of the award winning PBS series \'Battlefield\'.

In the second half of World War II the German Army faced numerically superior armoured forces on the Eastern and Western Fronts. In order to counter this threat, tank destroyer production was increased. One of these tank destroyers was the Jagdpanzer 38 (t), or 'Hetzer', which proved to be a successful design with over 2,500 being produced in the 14 months before the end of the war. This title provides all the information that AFV modellers will need to build variants of the Jagdpanzer 38 (t) 'Hetzer', including the Bergepanzer 38 (t) recovery vehicle. It also includes camouflage, paint schemes and markings.

The New Yorker declared the first volume of Ian Kershaw's masterpiece "as close to definitive as anything we are likely to see," and that promise is fulfilled in this stunning second volume. As Nemesis opens, Adolf Hitler has achieved absolute power within Germany and triumphed in his first challenge to the European powers. Idolized by large segments of the population and firmly supported by the Nazi regime, Hitler is poised to subjugate Europe. Nine years later, his vaunted war machine destroyed, Allied forces sweeping across Germany, Hitler will end his life with a pistol shot to his head. "More probing, more judicious, more authoritative in its rich detail...more commanding in its mastery of the horrific narrative." Milton J. Rosenberg, Chicago Tribune"
