Dr. Bell I. Wiley has long been the recognized authority on the soldier in the Civil War. His books The Life of Johnny Reb and The Life of Billy Yank have become classics in the literature. A former President of the Southern Historical Association, and chairman of the Executive Committee of the Civil War Centennial Commission, Dr. Wiley is presently in the History Department at Emory University, Atlanta. The text for this special issue is based primarily upon new material which he has discovered since the writing of his two definitive books on the common soldier.
