History records few stories more dramatic than that of naval aviation in World War II. At the outset of the conflict in 1939, it was regarded by some officers and strategists as a weapon of dubious quality and questionable utility. Nevertheless, naval aviation was to become a vital force in the Allied victory. Powerful, flexible and the most mobile of all weapons used at sea, naval air power had a decisive influence upon events in all theaters of operation. The airplane and the aircraft carrier inspired new tactics and technologies, resulting in a revolution in naval warfare as profound as that caused by the introduction of steam and armor plate. For the first time, naval battles were fought without the opposing fleets ever catching sight of each other.

2012
Format: PDF
Size: 17.8 Mb
Language: English

Written by one of Israel's most notable scholars, this volume provides a breathtaking history of Israel from the origins of the Zionist movement in the late nineteenth century to the present day. Organized chronologically, the volume explores the emergence of Zionism in Europe against the backdrop of relations among Jews, Arabs, and Turks, and the earliest pioneer settlements in Palestine under Ottoman rule. Weaving together political, social, and cultural developments in Palestine under the British mandate, Shapira creates a tapestry through which to understand the challenges of Israeli nation building, including mass immigration, shifting cultural norms, the politics of war and world diplomacy, and the creation of democratic institutions and a civil society. References to contemporary diaries, memoirs, and literature bring a human dimension to this narrative history of Israel from its declaration of independence in 1948 through successive decades of waging war, negotiating peace, and building a modern state with a vibrant society and culture. Based on archival sources and the most up-to-date scholarly research, this authoritative history is a must-read for anyone with a passionate interest in Israel. Israel: A History will be the gold standard in the field for years to come.

The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) AV-8B Harrier II is a single-engine ground-attack aircraft that constitutes the second generation of the Harrier Jump Jet family. Capable of vertical or short takeoff and landing (V/STOL), the aircraft was designed in the late 1970s as an Anglo-American development of the British Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the first operational V/STOL aircraft. Named after a bird of prey, it is primarily employed on light attack or multi-role missions, ranging from close air support of ground troops to armed reconnaissance. The AV-8B is used by the United States Marine Corps (USMC), the Spanish Navy, and the Italian Navy. A variant of the AV-8B, the British Aerospace Harrier II, was developed for the British military, while another, the TAV-8B, is a dedicated two-seat trainer.

The large warship, by virtue of cost and complexity, is becoming increasingly the prerogative of the two major naval powers and a book on the subject is, necessarily, devoted in great part to two fleets. Warship development is composed largely of one power's efforts to neutralize an advance on the part of another and warship designs of the last twenty years have been dominated by one of two major developments — the guided missile and the nuclear submarine. These have dictated weaponry and electronics which have, in turn, defined the ship, which is, after all, only the package which delivers them.

The struggle for Vietnam occupies a central place in the history of the twentieth century. Fought over a period of three decades, the conflict drew in all the world’s powers and saw two of them—first France, then the United States—attempt to subdue the revolutionary Vietnamese forces. For France, the defeat marked the effective end of her colonial empire, while for America the war left a gaping wound in the body politic that remains open to this day.
How did it happen? Tapping into newly accessible diplomatic archives in several nations and making full use of the published literature, distinguished scholar Fredrik Logevall traces the path that led two Western nations to lose their way in Vietnam. Embers of War opens in 1919 at the Versailles Peace Conference, where a young Ho Chi Minh tries to deliver a petition for Vietnamese independence to President Woodrow Wilson. It concludes in 1959, with a Viet Cong ambush on an outpost outside Saigon and the deaths of two American officers whose names would be the first to be carved into the black granite of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Historically, Britain used some South Atlantic islands for naval bases. The populace wished to stay with Britain. In 1982, the Falklands went from diplomatic issue to military crisis. Lying closer to Argentina, the initiative was theirs; April 2nd, they overwhelmed small British units. Margaret Thatcher's government sent naval and air units on Apr 5. The photos herein, and the blow-by-blow record, put you in the cockpits or with the troops as they fought. This was a war of Sea Harriers, Exocet and laser guided bombs, to stand off from heavily defended targets.

Stephen Coonts, America's foremost writer of aviation, now presents twenty-six dramatic true accounts of aerial combat from World War I to Vietnam. Never before has such a collection been drawn from such a wide range of sources — American, British, German, Japanese, and more. Experience firsthand combat from the wood-and-fabric biplanes to the most technologically advanced fighting machines. These are not stories of the planes, however, but of those that fly them and the steady hands, bold hearts and raw nerve it takes to survive in an aerial battlefield. This is an epic of tragedy and courage, and a powerful tribute to this century's aerial warriors.

The Encyclopedia of Twentieth-Century Warfare provides for the first time in a single volume a comprehensive and authoritative survey of the wars and conflicts of the modern age. Its A to Z section contains more than 3,000 entries, defining and explaining for the nonspecialist the battles, the commanders, the weapons, and the strategic, tactical, and even political concepts involved in waging war. War was always a terrible scourge, but in the twentieth century it has become a complex and ambiguous activity, rarely fought with clear-cut notions of what total victory might mean, and more often than not ending inconclusively.

Grade 9 Up–In this comprehensive overview of the evolution of labor, more than 250 succinct entries, ranging in length from a paragraph to several pages, discuss the cultural, economic, and political aspects of work and its impact on society. Although the 60-page index is only available in volume two, each book begins with an alphabetical and a topical listing of entries. Included are discussions of major social movements, such as capitalism, communism, and democratic socialism, and how they helped to shape our view of work; profiles of individuals; and some surprises such as the article on the comic strip "Dilbert." How technology has and continues to change work is demonstrated with exemplary entries on Amazon.com, the dot-com revolution, and e-commerce. The intent to include all aspects of work is established with discussions as varied as the mommy track, work in film, and cowboys. Each signed entry includes see-also references and suggestions for further reading. Pertinent black-and-white photos and illustrations enhance the clear text. This well-documented resource concludes with a five-page time line, charts, and other useful material.

This Handbook is a current, comprehensive single-volume history of Iranian civilization. The authors, all leaders in their fields, emphasize the large-scale continuities of Iranian history while also describing the important patterns of transformation that have characterized Iran's past. Each of the chapters focuses on a specific epoch of Iranian history and surveys the general political, social, cultural, and economic issues of that era. The ancient period begins with chapters considering the anthropological evidence of the prehistoric era, through to the early settled civilizations of the Iranian plateau, and continuing to the rise of the ancient Persian empires. The medieval section first considers the Arab-Muslim conquest of the seventh century, and then moves on to discuss the growing Turkish influence filtering in from Central Asia beginning in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The last third of the book covers Iran in the modern era by considering the rise of the Safavid state and its accompanying policy of centralization, the introduction of Shi'ism, the problems of reform and modernization in the Qajar and Pahlavi periods, and the revolution of 1978-79 and its aftermath. The book is a collaborative exercise among scholars specializing in a variety of sub-fields, and across a number of disciplines, including history, art history, classics, literature, politics, and linguistics. Here, readers can find a reliable and accessible narrative that can serve as an authoritative guide to the field of Iranian studies.
