Unusual Facts



James Madison was the first president to have served in the U. S. House of Representatives. He was the first president to wear long trousers. All previous presidents wore knee breeches (as did his successor, James Monroe, who continued to wear the traditional garb).



At 5’4” and less than 100 pounds, he was the shortest and lightest president.



Both of his vice presidents died in office.
