Unusual Facts

Andrew Jackson was the first president born in a log cabin.

At Jackson’s inauguration, celebrants poured into the White House, and in their enthusiasm they stood on the furniture, ripped curtains, broke glasses, and muddied carpets.

He was the first president to ride on a railroad train.

He survived the first attempt to assassinate a president.

During his presidency, running water was brought into the White House using a system of hollowed-out logs connected to a nearby reservoir.

In 1835 a 1,400-pound slab of cheddar cheese was delivered as a gift and placed in the entrance hall of the White House. The cheese, smell and all, stayed there for two years.
