Armoured Land Rovers

Various attempts were made during World War Two to produce armoured Jeeps, none of which made it into production, power-to-weight ratio generally proving to be an insurmountable stumbling block. Clearly, there are considerable logistic advantages in being able to deploy a small armoured vehicle which is not only easy to drive, but which shares part inventory and maintenance procedures.

On this basis, an armoured Land Rover would seem to offer a solution to a number of military problems.

The most recent manifestation of the armoured Land Rover is the Defender-based ‘snatch’ vehicle, which has already been deployed to Iraq. The best known is probably the Shorland, but other examples include the Glover Webb ‘armoured patrol vehicle’, the Hotspur Armoured Products Limited Dragoon and Sandringham 6, the Skirmisher 4x4 and Hussar 6x6 armoured personnel carriers from Penman Engineering Limited.
