Established in 1963, the Otokar company started out producing Magirus-Deutz buses under licence and has grown to become one of the major automotive manufacturers in Turkey. During the 1970s the company was purchased by the Koc Group and, in the mid-1980s, started to produce armoured security vehicles. By 1987 Otokar had negotiated an agreement to produce Land Rover Defenders in Turkey, initially for the Turkish armed forces.
The production of Defenders continues at the company’s Sakarya plant in Turkey, with more than 40 variants available using all three standard wheelbase lengths. The company also produces what is described as a ‘discreetly armoured station wagon’ using the standard Defender 110 transmission and engine, and yet incorporating sufficient armoured protection to make it suitable for providing protected transport for military and high-ranking civilian personnel. This vehicle has the appearance of a standard Defender 110.
Alongside these products, Otokar has developed a range of 4x4 tactical light armoured wheeled vehicles, using some technologies licensed from Land Rover as well as from the US company AM General.
