Revolution

Russia was to be the first to fall, and in her fall to open upon herself a tide of ruin in which perhaps a score of millions of human beings have been engulfed. The consequences of these events abide with us today. They will darken the world for our children’s children.

1923. (Crisis II, 511.)

All sorts of Russians made the revolution. No sort of Russian reaped its profit.

1931. (Crisis V, 350.)

Bolshevism is a great evil, but it has arisen out of great social evils.

1919, 29 May.

The Bolsheviks robbed Russia at one stroke of two most precious things, peace and victory— the victory that was within her grasp and the peace which was her dearest desire. Both were swept away from her. The victory was turned into defeat. As for the peace, her life ever since has been one long struggle of agonizing war.

1919, 5 November.

Just when the worst was over, when victory was in sight, when the fruits of measureless sacrifice were at hand, the old Russia had been dragged down, and in her place there ruled “the nameless beast” so long foretold in Russian legend. Thus the Russian people were deprived of Victory, Honour, Freedom, Peace and Bread. Thus there was to be no Russia in the Councils of the Allies, only an abyss which still continues in human affairs.

1929. (Crisis IV, 71.)

Meanwhile, the German hammer broke down the front and Lenin blew up the rear._ broke, all collapsed, all liquefied in universal babble and cannonade, and out of the anarchy emerged the one coherent, frightful entity and fact—the Bolshevik punch._The Supreme Committee—sub-human or super-human which you will—crocodiles with master minds, entered upon their responsibilities upon November 8.

1929. (Crisis IV, 79-80.)
