Glover Webb armoured patrol vehicle

Dating from around 1983, the Glover Webb armoured patrol vehicle (APV) was based on the One Ten chassis. It was said to be ‘a highly-mobile, non-aggressive armoured personnel carrier with good anti-ballistic properties and a low profile’. Typical users included military and para-military forces, typically employed on internal security or riot-control duties, airfield perimeter control and escort duties. The conversion was fully approved by Land Rover and parts’ commonality was claimed to be over 90%.

The welded hull was constructed from armoured sheet steel, and the windscreen and side windows were of 1.4in (35mm) multi-layer laminate glass, with a polycarbonate anti-spall liner. Glass-fibre composites were used to provide grenade and blast protection to the floor,

Shorland Series 5 was based on the llOin coil-sprung Defender chassis. The original aimoured patrol car was joined by turreted and un-turreted personnel carriers, and an air-defence vehicle carrying a pair of Blowpipe Javelin surface-to-air missiles. (TM)

And there was an additional belly plate under the cab area. The fuel tank was protected by the belly plate and was filled with explosion-protection foil.

Two doors provided access to the rear, where there was space for eight men. Gun ports and additional vision blocks could be fitted as required.

Optional equipment included a fire-extinguishing system, air conditioning, radio equipment, internal communication system, riot screens/folding visors, smoke or CS gas dischargers, and a power winch. The roof could be fitted with a machine-gun hatch suitable for mounting a general-purpose machine gun (GPMG).

The company also subsequently produced the Hornet, a lighter armoured vehicle on the Defender 110 chassis, which was suitable for commando and reconnaissance operations.
