Other armoured Land Rovers

A small number of armoured para-military Land Rovers have been produced by Alvis and supplied to UK law-enforcement agencies, including the Metropolitan Police.

Similar vehicles, known as Tangi and produced in a range of types, have been built on a reinforced version of the Defender 110 chassis, powered either by the V8 petrol engine or the Td5 diesel, for use in Northern Ireland. Rear bodies were constructed from armoured steel with applique armoured panels. Makrolon composite-armour panels were used to protect the engine compartment and radiator. Tangi was preceded by a locally-produced conversion known as Simba which consisted of a Series III chassis carrying a welded-steel armoured hull at the rear. The vehicle was mounted on the heavy-duty springs

In 2003, an armoured 6x6 was produced by Jaguar Land Rover (Poland) and was demonstrated to the Polish Armed Forces in 2004. Based on the Australian-designed Perentie Defender 130 chassis and known as the Perentie Huzar, the vehicle is powered by the 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine driving all six wheels through a five-speed gearbox. Fitted with modular armour, including top protection, it is eventually to be offered in three variants: the A-model, based on the Defender 130, the B-model which is derived from the Defender 110 and the smaller C-model which uses the Defender 90 chassis.

The Turkish Otokar firm also offers armoured Land Rovers for military, paramilitary and internal security roles. The ‘discreetly armoured station wagon’ looks almost like a standard Defender 110, whilst the more military-looking Akrep lightweight attack/defence vehicle and APC derivatives incorporate Defender automotive components in a heavy-duty armoured body. Standard variants of the APC, which is similar in appearance to the Shorland Mk 5, include ambulance and workshop vehicles. See page 186.
