Unusual Facts

Martin Van Buren was the first president born in the United States (all previous ones having been born in the British colonies prior to American independence).

The term O. K. was popularized because of Van Buren. His hometown of Kinderhook, New York, was sometimes referred to as Old Kinderhook, and as a result organizations that formed to support his candidacy in 1840 were named O. K. Clubs. O. K. meaning “all correct,” however, appeared as a slang term shortly before the Van Burenites adopted it.

A heating system was installed in the White House during Van Buren’s presidency.
