From Syria.
Only a small section of the neck is preserved. The surface is much weathered. In the back, part of the supporting pillar survives. Originally part of a standing funerary statue. The right side of the mouth, forehead, chin, and both earlobes are chipped away. There is a hole in the left top of the head and another in the left side of the head. The pupils are deeply drilled. Penn., no. 19; Cat., no. 89; Portraits, no. 40; Sotheby’s, 1 July 1969, no. 248; K. Parlasca, Getty MJ 8, 1980, pp. 141-146.
At the base, a marble plug for insertion in a socle. Heavy yellow-brown patina. The left shoulder was broken off in antiquity. The nose, lips, and curls over the forehead are missing. Considerably chipped on the right shoulder, right temple, and left cheekbone. The surface, especially of the bust, is worn. The drill was used for the hair, pupils, ears, and corners of the eyes. Cat., no. 73; Portraits, no. 36, ill.
The surface is well preserved, including the porcelain-like finish of flesh areas, especially on the right side of the face. The nose and mouth are slightly battered; there are many chips in the hair. The top back of the head was cut away in a flat plane for a modern repair. Minneapolis, no. 12; Cat., no. 72; Portraits, no. 39; UCSC-LMU, no. 12.
The right half of the bust was cut away or perhaps made separately. There are numerous chips on the cheeks and lips; the nose is missing. Some images of Antonine princes may be comparable (J. Charbonneaux, Mon. Plot. 44, 1950, p. 80, pi. 8), but none has the artistic delicacy of this bust. Cat., no. 69; Portraits, no. 35, ill.
The nose and both ears are missing. There are chips on the left eyebrow, beard, and hair. Portraits, no. 38, ill;/PGM, p. 63.
Nose and lips are damaged; the surface overall slightly worn. There was drill work in the ears. Inscription:
