FURTHER READING

Further reading might best begin with the poems themselves. The list below is meant to offer initial guidance to those seeking out texts and translations. Unfortunately many of these works, even in Latin, remain difficult to obtain. Moreover, some still lack complete English translations. Readers interested in the critical history of specific Latin texts can start with the entries of the Clavis Patrum Latinorum (CPL). Otherwise, the chapter’s citations point to many important studies of individual authors, works, and themes.

Roberts 1989 will initiate the interested reader into broader matters of style and aesthetics, while Brown 2003 vigorously surveys the panoramic background. Each provides a sure foothold within a vast terrain still inviting exploration.
