• Field number (written on back of figurine): two (?) illegible digits followed by what appears to be 662
Previous Publications: Laumonier (1956: 147, pl. 43, no. 398)
Height: 60.2 mm
Iconographic type: Female head wearing a high stephane ringed around the base with round globes, probably fruits. Possibly to be classed as an “Oriental Aphrodite” head, or at least a head showing influence from the “Oriental Aphrodite” type (Chapter 4.2.2.2) .
Archaeological Context: Private house in the Theater Quarter; a different room of the same house produced A136, another “Oriental Aphrodite” head. See detailed discussion of this house’s contents in Chapter 5.3.2 .
Fabric Type: Reddish “Cycladic” fabric, untempered, levigated (Chapter 2.5.3)
Manufacturing Techniques:
• Type of temper used (Chapter 3.4.1): Untempered
• Number of molds used (Chapter 3.4.2): Single mold for head (though intact examples suggest that the body was probably double-molded)
• Condition of mold: Used, but legible
• Solid or hollow: Solid (though attached body may well have been hollow)
• Presence of vents (Chapter 3.4.3)? N/A
• Presence of separate base?
• Presence of visible fingerprints? A partial fingerprint or cloth impression at the base of the figurine’s neck demonstrates that the head was made separately, before attachment to body
• Evidence of reworking (Chapter 3.4.3)? Minor knife trimming on underside of crown (Chapter 3 . 4.3.2); possible minimal retooling
• Handmade applique elements present (Chapter 3.4.2)? Projecting blob of clay at back of head Minor breaks at the upper back of stephane may testify to the breaking off of some additional applique coiffure elements.
• Method of attachment of head, limbs, etc. (Chapter 3.4.2): Scoring on base of neck (Chapter 3 4 2 3)
• Evidence of “bubbles” created by plaster mold (Chapter 3.4.2)? No
• Appearance of back of figurine: Roughly modeled; clay projection at the back of head may have been designed for the coroplast to grip while removing figurine from mold
• Presence of preserved slip, self-slip, and/or limewash (Chapters 3.4.4, 3.4.5)? One minute trace of possible limewash
• Presence of preserved paint (Chapter 3.4.5)? One possible, but uncertain, trace of red (2.5YR 3/2) paint on bare clay on the upper front side of the stephane
• Evidence for repair: No
